About the ASA Annual Meeting Employment Service

The ASA Employment Service (ES) is an online service with an interactive scheduling calendar for setting up interview appointments. It is separate and distinct from the year-round ASA Job Bank in that the ES operates only during the summer to facilitate setting up short screening interviews during the Annual Meeting.

This annual service assists sociologists and prospective employers by providing convenient opportunities for interviewers and job seekers to meet in a neutral, monitored environment for initial short interviews during the Annual Meeting. On average, the service usually manages over 100 position listings and more than 400 candidates, resulting in over 1,400 appointments for screening interviews.

How to Participate
The first step for all candidates and interviewers is to preregister for the 2012 Annual Meeting. The first step for employers is to make sure there is a record for their department/institution in the ASA database.
  • Candidates (job seekers).  After preregistering for the Annual Meeting--including paying for ES Candidate Registration ($40 ASA Members, $75 Non-members), the next step is enter this online portal for the Employment Service and proceed to fill out the online forms to post your information, upload your resume, and indicate your availability on the interactive scheduling calendar. You may then search the posted job listings and send messages about your interest in being interviewed.

  • Employers (organizations). Employers may enter the ES portal to register for the service, post job listings, and designate interviewers from a roster of preregistrants. Organizations/institutions that do not have a record in the ASA database may use the link on the main ES page to create the necessary record. The record ID and password is needed in order to log into the ES module to pay the one-time ES fee ($285) and use the service to post job listings, search for candidates, and schedule interviews. This fee includes one reserved table in the ES Interview Room for designated interviewers to share.

  • Interviewers (employer representatives on-site). Individuals who will be interviewing candidates must be registered for the Annual Meeting. Employers will not be able to designate non-registrants as interviewers. When an individual has been successfully designated as an Interviewer, she/he will be able to login into the ES portal to begin the process of reviewing candidate profiles and scheduling interviews.  There is no additional ES fee for Interviewers.
Registering for the Annual Meeting
Online general meeting registration is open to ASA members from mid-October to July 11. Candidates who preregister before May 1st may add the Employment Service to their registrations from May 1 to July 11, 2012. OnSite registration opens in Denver on August 16. Potential service users are urged to register as soon as possible in order to take full advantage of the  communication opportunities that the online Employment Service offers.

Any registrant who did not add the ES to her/his meeting registration by July 11 will be unable to use the online ES prior to the Annual Meeting to create a profile, upload a resume, view job listings, or respond to interview requests.
